What is a doula?

A doula is a support person providing physical, emotional and informational support leading up to and during labor.

Doulas are advocates and supporters. They have the knowledge and tools to inform laboring people and new parents about their options and their rights.

During birth, the doula's job is to provide a safe and supportive environment for the birthing person. This can include comfort measures, breathing techniques, helping the birther move positions, supporting the birthing partner and keeping the birth team informed of the birth plan. Doulas are there to create an empowered but nurturing environment.

My main goal as a doula is to prepare parents to feel comfortable asking questions and advocating for themselves during labor and to be a calming, grounded force throughout pregnancy and labor.

My tool belt of comfort measures includes acupressure, hands on counter pressure and massage, aromatherapy, rebozo, breathing exercises and visualization techniques.

After birth, during the postpartum period, the doula's job is to support the birthing person to heal from labor while helping with breastfeeding and newborn care. The doula can also provide physical support around the house or take care of the baby while parents rest, shower and eat. Postpartum doulas are great, nonjudgemental resources who can help you decipher what's "normal" and what you may want to seek outside support for.

As a postpartum doula, I help where I am needed most. I do love cooking and preparing delicious and nourishing meals for new parents so that they can focus their attention on healing and caring for their new baby. I like to stay busy and don't mind doing dishes, laundry or light housework. When needed I'm happy to hold your new one, answer questions, or help with breastfeeding. If I am there to help you at night, my goal is to do everything possible to ensure you and your partner get the rest you need. As a certified prenatal and postpartum yoga teacher, I can also help you ease back into movement as your body heals.
